A Catholic Bishop has said Kenyans will continue to shoulder the burden of the high cost of living as long as they continue electing bad leaders.Catholic Diocese of Kericho Bishop Emmanuel Okombo said it is time Kenyans learn to elect “sober leaders.”“When I hear people complain that so and so is corrupt, I ask myself who elected them? We should elect leaders we trust,” he said, while speaking during a Jubilee ceremony for priests at St Mary’s Catholic Parish in Mundika, Busia.Kenyans are currently grappling with a high cost of living with basic food prices hitting a record high.Maize flour the country’s staple food is currently retailing between Sh150 and Sh170 up from Sh103 in February amid an acute shortage of the product.Sugar prices have also risen above the ceiling with a two-kilogram packet retailing at over Sh200, the highest ever. The government blames the high food prices on a drought that hit most parts of the country in late 2016 and early 2017 year.Despite the onset of the rains, however, food prices are yet to drop with millers reporting flour cost will not fall anytime soon as they grapple to acquire maize whose supply is on the decline. The government on Friday opened a white and yellow maize importation window to close the domestic maize gap and suppress flour prices. This came after it released one million bags from the Strategic Grain Reserve which millers said was a drop in the ocean. The opposition blames the skyrocketing cost of living on the Jubilee administration which it claims has failed to adequately plan and cushion Kenyans from the economic hardships bedeviling the country.
