Hotels at the Coast are anticipating more domestic tourists than international tourists in the upcoming December holiday.
The international market is yet to pick as the county and national governments struggle to attract more foreign tourists during the vacation season.
According to projection reports released by the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC), hotels in the region expect 75 per cent bed occupancy during this festive season.
Sixty per cent of the guests are expected to be local tourists.
KAHC Chief Executive Officer Sam Ikwaye said they are still speculating on the number of tourists who will visit the region, since most of them wait until the last minute.
“This is largely due to the last-minute nature of bookings that has been evident over time for locals making rush decisions to take a holiday,” said Ikwaye, as quoted by The Standard.
He also noted that the international market has not yet picked although the county and national governments have come up with different marketing incentives to attract huge numbers into the country.
“A lot more families and the middle class are expected to come for holidays in star-rated hotels as well as in alternative accommodation service providers such as apartments and even home-stay packages,” he said.
