Machakos University is holding the first Annual International Conference at its premises in Machakos town.
The conference's theme is; Harnessing scientific research, Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Development.
Speaking at the event's launch on Tuesday, Principal Secretary, State Department of University Education and Research Professor Japheth Micheni urged universities to major on quality education and not students' population.
“Ensure that you give the quality education and mostly on sciences and research related subjects to ensure that there is enough and qualified personnel to feel the market since there is a serious deficit," Michemi said
The event which brings professors, lecturers, researchers and students from all over the world is aimed at improving the perception on science-related subjects and agriculture focusing on the national big four agendas and the Kenyan vision 2030.
During the exercise, the Konza technopolis CEO and the Machakos University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enable good relationship between the two on education and research at the Silicon City and training at the university.
Muchemi urged universities to ensure that they impart the best knowledge to students so as to ensure a developed nation in terms of agriculture, infrastructure, housing, research, and technology.
“Universities have embarked on enrollment and forgotten the key role of education since its turned as business and that should stop if as a nation we are future focused”, Muchemi said.
