A road construction company in Kisumu has been urged to employ local people to provide cheap labour. South West Kisumu MCA Joseph Abiola on Saturday said women and the youth should be employed at SBI road construction firm, currently working on the road between Kisumu airport and Kisian junction. Abiola said it is not proper to bring people from outside Kisumu West constituency to offer such services, noting that SBI is only allowed to import technical staff. “SBI must just listen to us. There is no way they are coming with workers from other parts of the country yet we have labour here and our women and youth must be employed,” he said. He revealed that he was in talks with the company to have more local people hired at the firm. Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Abiola said those turning up to be employed were many and only a few will be taken. He further urged the people to restrain from destroying property of the construction firm and allow him as their leader to negotiate on their behalf. “It is my appeal to our people to avoid confrontation and stop destroying property of SBI. As leaders, we are in the forefront to ensure our people are employed,” he said. Chaos broke out last week at the SBI camp next to Kisian and some staff of the construction firm were injured and taken to the hospital. SBI has in the meantime withdrawn from the camp, citing insecurity and promised to return once the leaders sat down and ironed out the emerging issues and their security guaranteed.
