The National Parents Association has waded into the ongoing lecturers’ strike that has paralyzed lerning in all public universities for the past over two months.
Associations national chairman Nicholas Maiyo now wants the ministry of Education to consider hiring lecturers on a contract basis so as to allow learning resume in universities.
Addressing the press in Eldoret town on Saturday, Maiyo expressed concerns the strike had taken longer hence need for a short-term solution to be reached.
“It is sad that lecturers strike has paralyzed learning in public universities. Students are suffering and it is agonizing to parents who have invested by paying school fees,” said Maiyo.
“We don’t know how long this strike may take, it might be months or even years and we need the government to consider employing lecturers on contractual terms so that learning resumes even as they engage striking lecturers,” he added.
Lecturers and other public universities non-academic staff have been on strike since March 1 demanding the implementation of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Attempts to seal a deal with the striking dons has hit a snag and they have vowed not to return back to work unless their demands are fully met.
