John Mugo, an educationist based in Kiambu says that the current teacher to student ratio does not meet the international standards.

Speaking on Saturday, Mugo noted that hiring of more teachers will improve performance in schools.

“The ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should hire more teachers in order to meet the international standards on teacher per student ratio,” he said.

The educationist noted that most schools have inadequate teachers a move he said reflects on poor performance.

The official urged teachers unions to push for recruitment of more teachers.

“Apart from fighting for the rights of teachers unions should also fight for the welfare of students,” added Mugo.

Last week, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i said the government will hire more teachers.

He said the Ministry was engaging with TSC and teachers unions to hire more teachers in public primary and secondary schools.

The CS said the government was committed to improve education standards in the country.
