The Catholic Diocese of Eldoret Bishop Cornelius Korir has appealed to the national government to employ more teachers if it wants to achieve the Millennium Development Goal number two on education for all.

Speaking on Sunday after conducting the Sunday mass, Korir said the government must invest in education as it was the only tool that can empower future generations and bring about transformation.

He said following the introduction of the free primary and free day school education, most of the schools in Uasin Gishu County were under staffed, making learning difficult.

He also said some teachers had left the profession for greener pastures while others had retired or died hence the need to replace them.

"How can one teacher handle a class of over 70 students? The government must do something to improve the quality of education," said the cleric.

He urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to listen to parents’ pleas and recruit more teachers since the recent hiring of 5,000 teachers countrywide was just a drop in the ocean.

He said TSC needs to hire more than 5,000 teachers if it wants to improve the quality of education.
