The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nakuru branch executive secretary Njau Kuria has called on the government to recruit 80,000 teachers instead of using volunteer graduates.
Speaking to journalists in Nakuru town, Njau said the government has the capability of hiring teachers.
“I want to urge the government to take education matters seriously and recruit more teachers in public schools,” Kuria said.
“Education standards continue to deteriorate due to shortage of teachers in the county and across the country.”
Kuria added that the current teacher-student ratio is worrying and there is need for urgent measures to boost education standards.
The executive indicated that education standards will improve if the government employs more teachers. He added that the State should also address the challenges facing teachers to motivate them for good service delivery.
Kuria said the union will not allow any person who is not registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to teach in public schools.
