Appellate Judge David Maraga Kenani has been nominated for the post of Chief Justice and is expected to take over from Dr Willy Mutunga who retired in June this year.
On Thursday, the Judicial Service Commission made the announcement awaiting approval from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Justice Maraga who is based in Kisumu is set to make history in Gusiiland as the first Chief Justice to hail from the region.
Justice Maraga who hails from Bonyamatuta in Nyamira County was the only Kisii after former CIC chair Charles Nyachae who was also expected to garner for the position failed to apply for the top Judiciary job.
If Uhuru approves his name, he will become the second CJ under the new constitution that was promulgated in August 2010.
He beat other candidates among them Supreme Court Judges Smokin Wanjala and Jackton Ojwang as well renown law Professor Makau Mutua.
