Sex workers in Embakasi, Lang’ata and Dagoretti respectively have recorded the highest numbers of HIV infections in Nairobi.

This is according to a recent testing campaign.

The results which were first publicly presented at the HIV conference in Paris this week revealed the three subcounties are ahead in rates of infection among sex workers in Nairobi's nine sub-counties.

According to Nairobi County Government representative Caroline Ngunu-Gituathi, only about 11 per cent of the sex workers had been tested despite having the highest figures of prostitutes in Kenya.

She also revealed that there are 29,494 female prostitutes in the city with 11,042 male prostitutes and another 6,216 drug injectors with their HIV prevalence rates of 29.3, 18.2, and 18.3 per cent respectively.

“We carried out a HIV testing and linkage to treatment campaign with an aim of increasing the number of this high risk people who know their HIV status,” she said as quoted by the Standard.

Ngunu also added there are many sex dens in Ruaraka, Starehe, Makadara, Westlands, Kamkunji, Dagoretti, Embakasi, Kasarani and Langata.
