This year’s national celebrations to mark the International Day for Condom were held at Nakuru’s Nyayo Gardens with messages of safe sex taking centre stage.
The celebrations came on time just when lovers are preparing to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14.
Speaking during the function highly attended by youths, Deputy Director National Aids Control Council (NACC) Dr. Emmy Chesire expressed concern over the high number of new HIV/AIDS infections among the youths in universities across the country.
"The reason we decided as a council to bring this national event here in Nakuru is because of the high number of universities around which has seen a very big population of youths engage in unprotected sexual activities thus predisposing themselves to contraction of the AIDs," she said.
However, Dr. Chesire said the council is now designing another approach to youth activities within the non-medical setups that will incorporate maisha centres in the rural areas to provide youths with an opportunity to explore other avenues to express themselves.
The council said is set to distribute more than five million condoms across several counties in the country to ensure adults can be able to engage in safe sex.
Youths who attended the event lauded the move to engage them saying that most of them have little knowledge on HIV.
The function was also attended by Nakuru county commissioner Joshua Nkanatha who urged young people to take care of themselves.
