The rate of HIV spread in Kisii County has increased from 6 percent last year to 8.9 percent in the current year. This was revealed by Kisii County Director of Medical services Dr. Geoffrey Otomu, who was speaking in Kisii town while answering questions over raised concerns by residents over lack of enough equipment for testing the virus at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and other hospitals across the county. Dr. Otomu said that the increase in the rates of HIV has been brought about by the high number of people allegedly engaging in prostitution, especially in Kisii town and called on residents to be cautious and use protection while having sex. “It is true that the rate of HIV has increased in our county and the preference rate now stands at 8.9 percent,” said Otomu. Kisii County Health Executive Sarah Omache said that to take services closer to the people, her Ministry is planning to employ more doctors and open dispensaries across the county. “We have dispensaries yet to be opened because of lack of enough personnel but we have a plan to ensure we give proper services,” she said.
