A section of Nakuru youth leaders now want the county government to honour a pledge to supply the newly opened library with seats.

Led by James Wakibia, who identifies himself as a social activist, they claim the county government had made a pledge to supply the seats after scores of children who visited the facility were forced to seat on the floor due to insufficient seats.

He said the library has a deficit of hundreds of chairs and tables.

“The cost of supplying the tables and chairs compared to what to they take for allowances is peanuts. They promised to give them the seats and factor the issue into their budget but this has not been done,” he said.

Wakibia said the county government needed to fulfil the said pledge to enable learners affected by the ongoing teachers strike learn in a better condition.

“If the country cannot pay teachers they should at least make it comfortable for students who are willing to study," he said.

He was speaking to the press at the Library on Saturday where he challenged the government to come up with a kitty to cater for such needs.

His views were echoed by Nominated MCA Esther Mengere who said that majority of the children in the county could not afford private tuition.

“Some children only hope is the library and unfortunately they do not get a comfortable area to study from,” she said.
