Nakuru County assembly majority leader Waithuki Njane wants Nakuru MCAs to go on a foreign educational trip to see how other countries deal with their waste.
His sentiments come as Nakuru grapples with a waste management crisis as the Kayole dumpsite is full and there is no land available for its relocation. Njane says that the MCAs can borrow a leaf from those countries on how to manage waste.
However, Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has said that the government has not given up hope of acquiring a parcel of land to be used as a dumpsite.
Mbugua, who was speaking during the launch of various projects in Lakeview ward, said that the major problem facing the county on waste disposal was the Kayole dumpsite in Naivasha which has become an environmental risk.
“We have visited the Kayole dumpsite today and we saw it is not being used well. It is a major health and environmental hazard,” Mbugua said.
Mbugua noted that lack of land where the dumpsite can be relocated has been a problem because people fear selling their land to be used for dumping.
“People are not willing to sell us as their land as they fear that the dumpsite will pose risks to them. I would like to assure them that the envisioned dumpsite will be modern and less risky,” Mbugua added.
