A middle-aged woman working as a house manager has denied stealing from her employer during the festive season. Damaris Moraa, 44, on Friday appeared before Nakuru's chief resident magistrate, Felix Kombo, and distanced herself from accusations that she stole goods worth Sh55,000 from one Marget Kioko. The prosecution said the theft occurred on December 20 last year at Naka estate in Nakuru town. The court heard that the accused had been left in charge of the home by the complainant, who had travelled upcountry in Kitui for the Chrismas holiday. The magistrate was told that the accused, who was in charge of other workers at the home, failed to exercise maximum duty to ensure safety of her employer’s property and was the prime suspect as she went into hiding immediately her former employer complained of the missing property. She was remanded in custody after failing to raise a cash bond of Sh40,000 or a cash bail of Sh20,000. In mitigation, she claimed that she was a mother of eight children who depended on her for food and other needs. She said that her husband is serving a life sentence. The case will be heard on February 17.
