The Mombasa County government has ordered house owners in the Coastal town of Mombasa to repaint their buildings as the devolved unit embarks on beautifying the city.
The county government in a special notice on Friday ordered that all houses be repainted in uniformity.
All residential and business houses, will, beginning Friday be painted with orange with blue strips surrounding windows and doors.
Lands Chief Executive Committee member Edward Nyale said house owners who will not comply with the order will be penalized.
However, not all houses will be painted. Those exempted from the order include the famous touristic attraction, Fort Jesus, the Mombasa Law Courts Government offices and any other house occupied by security personnel such as police stations.
"This (painting exercise) applies to all house owners with the exception of buildings as stated in this notice," the order read in part.
The economy of Mombasa County greatly relies on the tourism industry and the beautification exercise could be one of the moves the devolved unit is using to woo more visitors to the town that border the Indian Ocean.
The re-painting exercise will officially be launched in Old Town before being rolled to other towns. Old Town has some of the oldest houses in Mombasa.
