[Photo: standardmedia.co.ke]Igembe South in Meru County MP elect John Paul Mwirigi who is barely 24 years, has attributed his victory to a rather odd factor.Mwirigi has said that his victory is mainly as a result of a pullover that he was always wearing during his campaigns to an extent that his competitors started to ridicule him for the same. However, it was not Mwirigi's wish to be always in the same pullover. It was because he had no other one."At the beginning of campaigns, my main competitor went to a popular market here in Igembe South and told a huge crowd that I didn't deserve to become their MP as I couldn't even afford to dress properly. He told the crowd that I was always wearing the same pullover because I could not even be able to buy a suit," Mwirigi told K24 TV on Thursday in Maua.He added: "It is after these utterances by my opponent that my political fortunes started to change for the better. Since then all Igembe South constituents started to identify me as 'yule kijana wa fulana moja'. Even during Tuesday's election, old people who couldn't read my name were asking to be shown the 'kijana wa fulana' to vote for me."He noted that that the opponents had even tried to send emissaries to buy the same pullover at Sh200,000 after it made him extraordinarily popular."They thought it had some magical powers and that is why I was always wearing it. But it is just an ordinary 'mtumba' pullover," he said. The youngest MP in Kenya in present times also attributed his victory to his closeness to 'mwananchi' and his involvement in community development activities. He said he is from a poor background and it is a miracle that he even got university fees."I am always with my people and they know the struggles I have gone through for the prosperity of our society and that's why they chose me. My opponents spent a lot of money in their campaigns. Some even tried to bribe voters but the people of Igembe were wise to choose someone who has their interests at heart and that is me," he said.
