It has emerged that mobile telephone scammers defrauded National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi of Sh300,000.
This emerged on Tuesday as MPs accused police officers of protecting conmen who have allegedly been operating from Kamiti Preison.
This was during a special seating that was done in the presence of CID Director and other police officers.
Safaricom has also been put on the spot for failing for failing to stop the fraudsters, who are accused of registering new phone numbers using MPs’ names.
Murang’a County women rep Sabina Chege narrated to the panel that sought to unravel the mystery of the fraudsters on how the conmen set to defraud her friends and fellow MPs.
“The message said I had a chronic illness and I needed to travel abroad immediately and I needed Sh6 million,” said Chege.
“They sent the message at night, so when they sent it to Jakoyo Midiwo, he actually sent Sh20,000 and my name appeared on the MPesa message,” she added.
Last week, MPs in the house brought the matter to the attention of the speaker, saying the fraudsters were wreaking havoc in their lives.
“So Mr. Speaker, a lady, she posts all the obscene photos and sent to members of parliament,” complained Majority Speaker Aden Duale during the past seating.
The leaders accused the security apparatus of laxity, saying they have let the fraudsters thrive in their game.
