[Photo|Busia County Government]Busia anti-IEBC demonstrators provoke the police as they lit bonfire Busia anti-IEBC demonstrators on Friday provoked the police by lighting a bonfire near the Busia County Assembly in Busia town, paralyzing activities along the busy Northern corridor for over 30 minutes. The demonstrations had started at the Orange Democratic Movement Offices and ended at the IEBC offices. Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi, Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga, MCAs Moses Ochieng, John Obwogo, Halima Hussein, Florence Atieno and Busia Assembly Liaison officer Tony Onyango led the protests. The anti-riot police had allowed protesters to present their memorandum to the IEBC officials. After finding the offices closed they returned signaling the end of the demos. However, some of the protesters started lighting bonfires in the middle of the road as police restrained themselves unlike last Friday when they engaged them in running battles. The police in a lorry and a Land Cruser later pursued them as they headed back to ODM offices and fired live bullets and teargas canisters to disperse them."Teargas is our right and we have paid for them. Without teargas the demos will be meaningless. We will not be intimidated," said one of the demonstrators. The leaders condemned police action of using live bullets and tear gas to disperse demonstrators, saying they had been paid to maintain law and order.Deputy Governor Mulomi said the demonstrations would continue until reforms are put in place by the electoral body.Odanga blamed the police for using excessive force saying they will continue with the demos until the IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba is shown the door.
