Nelson Chege is not an ordinary man from Githiga village in Kiambu, he was a member of the Kenya Airforce which he quit to start maize milling in Kiambu Town.
In an interview with Standard Digital Entertainment, Chege said that he served in the military from 1993 to 2003 but opted out of the defense forces in order to improve the lives of his community members, hence starting Hekima Posh mill.
“Whenever I went back to the village, I realized that most people produced maize but the nearest posho mill to our home was seven kilometers away,” Chege said.
He said that the main reason he quit the Airforce job was after he nearly died in the battlefield and he wanted to be away from the “dangerous” war zone.
“After escaping death by a whisker, I did not think twice about quitting. The scar on my face is a sign that anything can happen in the war zone. I was always on the lookout because the enemy could strike anytime,” he added.
It was not easy for him to start this posho mill business and he was forced to shift to different locations. He says that he later realized that a posho mill does well in an open air market.
“I made countless losses before realizing that a posh mill works in an open market. I also observed that maize prices go up just before the next harvest,” he said.
The business has been good and at times he has to seek the services of two assistants. This he says, earns him Ksh. 80,000 and on a good month, he can up to Ksh. 90,000 in profit.
