United States law scholar Makau Mutua has ridiculed Deputy President William Ruto for 'embarrassing' Kenya during a recent interview on CNN.

Mutua said Ruto fumbled in his latest media blitz, describing the interview as a 'painful' experience to the country's second person in command.

"He (Ruto) was unable to answer simple questions and form clear sentences in English. He was angry and loud. I was embarrassed a Kenyan leader could be so discombobulated before a worldwide viewership," he wrote in an article published by Sunday Standard.

Mutua, the Chair of Kenya Human Right Commission (KHRC), said Ruto failed because he was trying to defend the position of Jubilee Party no matter what truths he was presented with.

"I guess the reason for Ruto's bizarre performance is that Jubilee does not have a good story to tell," he said.

The SUNY distinguished professor added: "The CNN reporter exposed the illegitimacy of Ruto's outlandish assertions about voter turnout. He could not make a case for the legitimacy of the election (October 26 repeat presidential poll)."

During the interview on October 28, the DP defended the fresh election and dismissed claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win was illegitimate.

‘’You must win 50%... we have already surpassed that threshold… That means that in terms of the constitution, the legitimacy question is already answered," Ruto said.
