Former Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi on Wednesday narrowly escaped death when a plane she was travelling in crash landed shortly after taking off at Nyaribo Airstrip in Nyeri.
The former lawmaker, her son and daughter in law had just taken off at the airstrip before the plane developed mechanical problems forcing it to crash land a few meters away from the facility's runway.
Murugi said the plane showed it was taking off wrongly but the pilot managed to control the situation.
"We had come from home in Nyeri where we attended prayers of a bereaved family and we were flying back to Nairobi when the plane developed mechanical problems," the former MP told Radio Jambo.
Nyeri Central Assistant County Commissioner John Marete confirmed the incident saying experts have kicked off investigations into the accident.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident may have occurred due to the heavy rainfall at that time.
Nyeri is among counties that usually receive heavy rains every year. The county also experiences a lot of snow.
