In the past years before Gor Mahia came up, there were two football teams in Luo Nyanza; Luo Union and Luo Sports club.
Luo Union FC was formed in 1950s. The late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who is the father of Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, was the one who spearheaded the formation of Luo Union FC.
The team was successful as it finished second in the first ever Kenyan national league in 1964. In 1965 they were 1st runners-up after Feisal of Mombasa on goal difference.
After their success, there was a disagreement in the team, which led to a split. Some players split and formed Luo sports club.
In 1966 Luo Union FC missed playing the league as Luo sports club outshined them. Abaluhya Football Club (today AFC leopards) took the advantage of the split to dominate the league.
Towards the end of 1967, Luo Union FC officials. approached Tom Mboya who was the Minister for Economic Planning to discuss unifying the two rivals teams. Meetings went down in Tom Mboya's house.
On February 17, 1968, a consensus was arrived between Luo Union and Luo Sports Club factions to form a unified team. Several names were proposed for the unified team including Luanda Magere and Nile Stars FC. At last the name Gor Mahia was settled.
The name Gor Mahia was proposed by Aggrey Olango who played for Luo Sports Club.
