Machakos County has been one of the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's strongholds.
He has for a long time directly influenced politics in the county and entire Ukambani region. But things seem to be changing strategically as Wiper failed to secure more seats in the 2017 general election with two of the county's top seats being grabbed by Governor Alfred Mutua of the Maendeleo Chap Chap and lawyer Boniface Kabaka of Chama cha Uzalendo as the county's Senator.
Despite the political heat between Kalonzo and Mutua before the general elections that made the former support former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti against the latter, Mutua won the seat.
Mutua has been in office as the Machakos Governor for the last five years and is still in office meaning he is closer to Ukambani residents than Kalonzo who has been out of the government for five years. Mutua is one of the best governors in the country and besides politics, people re-elected him due to his development projects.
Kalonzo Musyoka's political future now hangs on a political cliff after he missed attending Raila Odinga's swearing in ceremony a factor that has led to mixed reactions from politicians with some of the Wiper politicians condemning him and terming him as a betrayer and a coward.
A section of the ODM politicians declared publicly that they will not support his 2022 Presidential bid. Governor Mutua also went on rebuking Kalonzo Musyoka as a coward and that it was not his first time to betray Raila Odinga.
Mombasa Governor Ali Joho who doubles as the ODM party deputy chairman publicly said he will not be ousting Kalonzo Musyoka as Raila's deputy. Apart from politicians, a section of Ukambani residents have also lost their trust in Kalonzo. Despite NASA leader Raila Odinga's silence on the matter, it is a fact he is looking for a potential politician to replace Kalonzo in Ukambani so that he doesn't loose his political influence in the region.
Raila is an influential politician nationally. You remember when he defeated Musalia Mudavadi in the 2013 Presidential race in his home Constituency, Sabatia? Despite Kalonzo Musyoka being a Kamba he can not still outdo Raila Odinga in the region according to political analysts.
Alfred Mutua does not pay any allegiance to either Jubilee or NASA and the only sure way of him dethroning Kalonzo Musyoka is joining Raila's camp come 2022.
