The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader narrowly survived being impeached twice in his first term as the Machakos governor.

Mutua who had it hard with MCAs, his former deputy Bernard Kiala and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama almost lost his job.

Mutua claimed that he was being fought by the leaders for opposing and questioning Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s decisions.

The governor had fallen out with Kalonzo and his Wiper party on grounds that his and other party members' opinions were disregarded by some of the party's top leaders.

In October 2016, 46 MCAs out of the 49 appended their signatures on a motion supporting Mutua’s impeachment.

The MCAs plans, however, hit a snag after several county legislatures who had earlier signed up for the motion withdrew their signatures.

It was alleged that governor Mutua had bribed the MCAs to drop the impeachment.

A month later, Mutua got into trouble after the MCAs plotted his removal again.

However,  31 MCAs failed to turn up in the assembly to debate the meeting.

The MCAs had traveled to Tanzania, a move that saw Mutua survive again.

Mutua has since had battles with MCAs even as he says he pushes for the county development's agenda.

Political analysts argue Mutua is a tactful politician and that is why he could succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.

“He is a smart politician and knows when to do his political things,” says political pundit, Peter Ngure.

Mutua is among the top politicians eyeing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
