Ours was a story of pure love brewed in the city of flamingoes, a love that would conquer everything and one that would hopefully lead to eternal happiness.

Ken and I had been dating for three years and we had just begun planning to move in and live as husband and wife. We had known each other well, loved each other immeasurably and hence nothing would hinder us from making a family.

Friends, family and colleagues knew how deeply in love we were and wished us nothing but a happy ever after. All the streets from Kanu Street to Kenyatta Avenue were witnesses of our love for they saw it everytime we passed by.

Employees at our favourite meeting joints such as Kunste and Merica Hotels had always admired us and some were even envious.

But this love would unfortunately not have a happy ending like many other love tales. Julie, my college friend lived next door and they had been dating for two years with Peter. So we made a perfect set of two couples given that Peter and Ken soon became best friends too.

Having been brought up in a religious family, I was determined to abstain from sex until marriage and somehow Ken had agreed with me despite not being a staunch christian.

Like Ken, Julie felt it was okay to test the waters and they had been having some good intimate moments with Peter once in a while.

As the bond became tighter, we began spending more time together and going out on weekends and the four of us enjoyed every bit.

Sometimes it would happen that Peter and I were working on weekends and since we were friends, we trusted our partners so much that we would let them go out and have some fun. After all, Julie could never betray me and Ken, my boyfriend could never lay his eyes on any other woman apart from me.

I once noted that Ken had begun mentioning Julie more often in his conversations and he had even said how pretty she was. I would, however, take no offence since Julie was more of a sister to me. Unlike Peter and I, Ken and Julie were more outgoing and preferred outdoor moments which we never enjoyed with Peter but didn't care anyway as long as our partners were loving it.

Ken always had a key to my place and he could, therefore, visit whenever he felt like even if I was not there. Sometimes I would just find them in the house watching a movie with Julie and I would join them after making dinner.

Then one Friday, Ken came to my place after work and said he would spend the whole weekend and would not mind being alone during the day since I would be working on Saturday. Even if he got bored, Julie would join him since she also never worked on weekends and they could do a movie before I came back in the evening.

Unfortunately, I got really sick at work and my boss insisted I had to take a day off. I agreed but then I would at least work until midday then go home.

When I got at my door, the music was so loud that Ken would not hear me knock the door. On opening the door, I almost lost my eyesight and was completely dumb. What would you even say on finding your fiance in real action with your best friend?

That, sadly was how I lost my fiancee to my best friend.
