For many years, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has been holding the nickname 'Juja Boys'.
The nickname was used by students from other universities as a way of frustrating their fellow comrades who considered the nickname insulting. As the name suggests, the university is known for offering technical courses including computer science, agricultural and engineering courses, which for many years have been associated with boys. For this reason, it was said that the university enrolled more boys compared to girls.Rumour has it that if you visited the campus back in 2010, you could have walked from the main road to the university’s main gate without spotting a single girl. The campus events were always full of boys, including boys from the neighbouring universities, who could gatecrash to ensure JKUAT boys had nothing to smile about. Girls were always limited and in great demand. Fortunately, the situation has rapidly changed, with girls now enrolling for different courses at the university. The varsity has since introduced ‘female-friendly’ courses which have seen many girls join the campus. The "Juja Boys" nickname is now slowly fading after losing its intended meaning.
