Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has unveiled a plan he says will help fight the deadly malaria disease in the Coastal County.
Joho who recently returned to the country after spending more than one month abroad as he seeks investors to come and establish businesses in Mombasa said his priority as he embarks on his final years at the helm of the county will be to ensure Mombasa residents receive quality healthcare.
He said the Health Department will receive the highest allocation during the 2018/2019 Financial Year and for the first time, the county will allocate more funds towards fighting Malaria.
"My government allocates the health sector the lions share of our budget of up to Sh1.9 billion," he said on Friday.
"Mombasa County is ready to beat Malaria. Now is the time to take collective action; both politically and financially to end this narrative," he added.
He called on his political opponents to join the initiative and make it a success.
He said time for politicking was over, adding that the time between now and 2022 when the country will hold another election is for development.
The county chief was speaking after he flagged off vehicles ferrying drugs to different hospitals in all the sub-counties of Mombasa.
Mombasa is prone to Malaria because of its nearness to the Indian Ocean which offers ground for breeding of mosquitoes.
