Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has urged residents to plant at least one tree during the ongoing rainy season.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Sunday, Mandago said this will help to increase the forest cover which is now in a dilapidated state due to too much deforestation.
He reaffirmed his government's commitment to planting many trees to achieve the 10 percent forest cover by 2022.
"I am calling upon residents to use this rainy season by at least planting one tree to increase the forest cover from the current 7 percent to at least 10 percent and don't forget that if you cut one plant two trees," said Mandago after planting a tree.
"In late April we will roll out a program that will see 16 million trees planted across the country. We want to curb desertification at whatever cost. Our aim is to ensure that we have planted as many trees as possible before the rainy season ends," he added.
The county boss further reiterated that his officers will go round the county sensitizing the people on the importance of afforestation.
He also challenged farmers in the region to ensure at least 10 percent of their land is under trees noting that it was a collective responsibility to conserve the environment.
