Based on the widely accepted theory of personality referred to as the big five. The following changes are likely to occur over time:
1. Openness. This refers to how open you both are to new experience. In a research that monitored couples on openness over time revealed that the level of openness for both husband and wife declined as years went by. This was mainly attributed to acceptance of both parties to routine associated with marriage.
2.Conscientiousness. This refers to how dependable and orderly one is. The study showed that husband conscientiousness level increased while for the wife remained the same. The increase in men conscientiousness level was majorly due to learning the importance of being dependable and responsible in marriage.
3. Extra-version. This refers to how outgoing one is. The research showed that both husband and wife reported lower levels of extra-version meaning that both became introverted. This was mainly due to restricting their social networks compared to when they were single.
4. Agreeableness. This refers to how well you get along with each other and others. The study showed that both became less agreeable over time. However, the wife agreeableness became more noticeable. In general, women tend to be more agreeable than men. The data suggested that women were learning to assert themselves more during the early years of marriage.
5. Neuroticism. This refers to how emotionally stable one is. The study showed that the husband showed a slight increase in emotional stability, however, the wife showed a greater one. In general, women tend to report higher levels of emotional stability than men. It is easy to speculate that the commitment of marriage had a positive effect on the wives emotional stability. Likewise, husbands whose wives were low in emotional stability remained happy in their marriage. No doubt, the emotional stability of their wives provided a stable base for these husbands.
