Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's effort to become a de facto leader for Abagusii community suffered a major blow on Sunday after a meeting organised by him was snubbed by key leaders.

Although Matiang'i was away in London, it is however understood that he facilitated the meeting with formation of a single party being on top of the agenda.

Only 10 MPs attended of the at least 25 elected leaders across Nyamira and Kisii Counties thus making his efforts to unite the community unattainable.

Among leaders against his move to be spokesperson include Governors John Nyagarama (Nyamira) and James Ongwae of Kisii.

Senior politicians led by Kisii senator Sam Ongeri and his Nyamira counterpart Okong'o Mogeni also were missing in action.

His main competitor and Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati also snubbed the Sunday meeting at Naivasha despite being invited formally.

For months now, Matiang'i is mobilising the community to rally behind a single political party with pundits claiming that he could be pushing to deputise William Ruto in 2022 polls.
