On 13th February 1990, Kenya was sent into mourning after the body of powerful Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. John Robert Ouko was discovered at Got Alila hills in Koru, Kisumu District.
Dr. Ouko had been reported missing for days and both the government and family got worried.
Amid the chaos that erupted after the discovery of the Minister's remains, worse was to follow when he was finally laid to rest 10 days later at his Koru home, Muhoroni.
In a tension-packed event that was attended by top leaders including President Daniel Arap Moi, signs of trouble were palpable as angry and chaotic youths engaged the much-dreaded General Service Unit officers in running battles.
President Moi found himself on the receiving end as anti- Moi slogans rented the air.
"You killed him, now take his body and eat," shouted the youth as veteran journalist and Dr. Ouko's biographer Caleb Atemi had once narrated the 1990 ordeal to KTN, a jibe that was directed at the under-siege Moi.
It took the intervention of the grieving Christabel Ouko, the slain Minister's widow to calm the crowd saying that his husband was a peace loving man
The circumstances surrounding the death of Ouko remain unclear 28 years later.
