Abortion has no doubt become a lucrative business in most of the Kenyan Universities. This is because of the accidental pregnancies that students find themselves in. Consequently, abortion becomes an option for such students.

At Moi University we meet a second-year political science student who has for the past two years been making a living by transporting students from the school's main campus to Nairobi for abortion.

"I have been doing the business ever since I was in the first year the second semester," she said.

The doctor who carries out the abortion happens to be her friend, and she earns a commission for each client.

The students who seek the abortion services come together and hire a vehicle which transports them to the hospital in Nairobi. After the service is done, they travel back within two to three days.

"If anyone wants the service she comes to me then we organize for a vehicle. She is the one who will have to cater for my transportation charges," said the lady who sought anonymity.

So far, she claims, she has taken around 7 students. The charges range between Sh7,000 to Sh20,000.

"I don't judge anyone, at the end of the day we all make mistakes. So I don't feel guilty," the student replied when asked if she regrets doing the business.

The abortion is done through a suction process where the fetus is sacked out of the uterus. This, the student says is harmless and does not have a lot of side effects.

The government illegalized intentional abortions, but going by the statistics of cases of abortions across universities, the law is clearly not being implemented.
