As retired President Daniel Moi prepared to hand over the mantle to his successor Mwai Kibaki (retired) on December 30, 2002, Kibaki's NARC fraternity was working on humiliating him (Moi).
According to his former Press Secretary Lee Njiru, Moi was deliberately kept in dark on the transition ceremony set for Uhuru Park, and had to drive to the scene to pass over the sword.
He claimed that Kibaki's team kept telling Moi that they were not ready, yet everything was set at Uhuru Park, forcing Moi to make an almost last minute dash for the place to prevent a crisis.
This, he said, was a plan by the immediate former opposition side to portray Moi as a tyrannical ruler who didn't want to hand over power despite having terribly lost in the poll held days earlier.
At 3pm Moi lost his patience and headed towards Uhuru Park, but his motorcade had to cut through the humongous crowd which was eager to see the new administration take over.
They chanted the anti-Moi 'yote yawezezekana bila Moi (all is possible without Moi)' slogan, with others shouting 'Mwizi (thief)' as he made his way through, only to find all dignitaries seated at the dais.
All this time, the crowd pelted him and his motorcade with mud and stones, in a chaotic event that saw Moi's Head of Public Service Sally Kosgei leave without a shoe.
Moi was not even allowed to say farewell to the people he had led for close to 24 years, with Kibaki deliberately failing to acknowledge his predecessor in his inauguration speech.
One hour later, Moi headed back to the State House for his last salute, before leaving for his Kabarak home aboard a Kenya Airforce chopper and a two fighter jet escort.
