Stakeholders in Mombasa engaged in mangrove tree planting and clean up at Mikindani creek in Jomvu Sub-county as the County marked World Environment Day, on June 3.

Led by the Department of Environment, Waste Management and Energy CeC Dr Godffrey Nato, residents and other participants planted mangrove trees and collected plastics and other paraphernalia at the creek.

Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi in a speech read on his behalf by Dr Nato said the County is committed towards the maintenance of a healthy and sustainable environment through its increased efforts in garbage collection, environmental conservation and coordination with the administrators and the public, in the management of waste at the grassroots. 

He further urged residents to participate in keeping the environment healthy by planting a tree so as to achieve the County target of planting 1.5 million trees.

Jomvu Sub County Administrator Ali Mwachamanga emphasized the importance of mangrove trees in cleaning the air and protecting the shorelines.

He urged residents to make tree planting a regular activity.

Participants included Nema, Kenya Forestry Service, Water Regulatory Authority, Big Ship, World Vision, Safaricom among others.
