A collaborative effort from the Mombasa County Department of Environment, NGO-Centre for Water Governance, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Sub County Administration saw a successful clean up exercise conducted at Kidogo basi village in Ziwa la Ng'ombe ward, Nyali Sub County.
This is among the series of clean up exercises that are currently being undertaken across the county.
Ward Administrators, community health volunteers, women and youth groups, Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki together with Mvita MP Abdulswammad Shariff Nassir have all been on the front line taking part in the clean up exercise held at Kiziwi area in Tudor ward on Sunday.
Residents are urged to take collective responsibility in matters of keeping the Mombasa environment clean.
On April 20, Governor Ali Hassan Joho affirmed his commitment to keep the city clean.
The governor flagged off 12 solid waste collection trucks at the Treasury Square flanked by by his Deputy Dr William Kingi' Tourism, Environment and Health CeCs alongside other stakeholders on Friday.
He said the trucks would help transport litter from various parts of the city to designated dumping sites.
Each truck has a capacity to transport approximately 20 tonnes of waste per trip. Joho commended the county staff for ensuring the county is clean despite the dumping challenges, saying there has been tremendous progress in dumping of litter.
“Whatever circumstances, I am grateful to the staff at the county. Certainly there will be a lot of challenges for the government to attain its goals. Whether we like it or not, whether people want to appreciate it or not, there has been tremendous progress unlike in the past,” he said.
Joho further called upon the residents of Mombasa to continue working closely with the County Government of Mombasa by dumping responsibly and keeping the environment clean.
