Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General on Sunday caused laughter at a church service when he revealed how Nairobi governor Mike Mbivi acquired the name Sonko.
Atwoli who was speaking at the ACK St Stephen's Cathedral along Jogoo Road in Nairobi said the county chief acquired the name because he wanted to paint a picture of a rich man since no one always wants to associate with poor people. He said Sonko had to get the name so as to elevate him to the class of the rich.
"Nobody wants to associate with a weak and a poor person," Atwoli said in Sonko's presence.
"In this life if you have nothing even your children will be taken away. Even governor Mike he had to give himself the name Sonko so that even he doesn't have, people will know he has riches."
Other leaders present at the church service included Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Women Representative Esther Passaris.
He said human being,s naturally never want to associate themselves with poverty calling on Kenyans to work hard and transform their individual lives.
Atwoli said Kenyan workers have entrusted him with the leadership at COTU because he earns a decent salary and cannot therefore steal their pension money.
