Siaya Senator James Orengo during a past interview. He has said that Nasa leaders might be required to defend themselves against the Police during demos. [Photo: nation.co.ke]With NASA leadership having declared daily protests starting this Monday, cat and mouse games are expected between supporters and the police now that the opposition have vowed to defy bans in the CBDs of Kenya's only 3 cities. However, what is likely to complicate matters even more, is Siaya Senator James Orengo declaration that demonstrating Nasa supporters may be forced to 'arm themselves' if police continue mishandling supporters."We cannot sit back and watch our people being killed. We shall now defend ourselves if the police cannot do their work right," Orengo is quoted in the media as saying. The same was echoed by Nasa leader Raila Odinga's former adviser on coalition affairs in the grand coalition government Miguna Miguna who said on Twitter: "Stop running away from them. Arm yourself and stand the ground. Just fight back."But how will Nasa supporters fight against brutally armed police with a variety of weapons ranging from tear gas, guns loaded with rubber and live bullets, to water cannons? Well, these might be Nasa's 'self-defence' mechanism as Orengo put it.Stones. This is an obvious weapon that supporters won't hesitate to employ when the need to do so come to play. It has happened in Kisumu, Kibera and other Nasa strongholds. Availability of stones is unlimited and, therefore, it is likely to be the dominant weapon in use against the police.Guns. Well, this could be seen to be a bit hyperbolical but the reality could dawn on the police soon than later when faced by armed protesters. Police IG Joseph Boinnet has already pointed out attempts by some Nasa 'goons' attempting to break into some police stations last week. Weren't they going there to steal 'mandazi'? Were they?Machetes. These are known to be easy to find weapons anywhere, anytime. It, therefore, goes without saying that demonstrators won't hesitate to apply it if need be.
