Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno Anyango is unarguably one of the biggest names in the Kenyan political scene, having been in the game for over three decades.

It is his political shrewdness that has enabled him to wade through the turbulent political times in Nyanza region that has for many years been an opposition zone.

The towering Makerere University-trained Economist who first served as minister during the Moi regime was KANU's point-man in the region where the party was very unpopular.

He was punished by the electorate for being a 'traitor' in the 1997 polls when little-known Ochillo Ayacko ended his grip in Rongo politics.

His effort to make a political come-back was dealt a blow in 2002 when Ochillo Ayacko humbled him again making him remain in the political cold for another five years.

Third time luckily, Otieno recaptured the Rongo seat in 2007 having gravitated to run towards Raila Odinga's axis in the polls.

He was Raila's key-man in the grand coalition government with Kibaki, thanks to his vast experience in politics.

In 2013 elections, he easily defeated his main rival Paul Abuor.

However, Otieno's troubles with the Orange party started immediately after the poll when he decided to form 'Kalausi' party to rival ODM.

During the Homa Bay County Senatorial by-election in 2015, he supported a rival candidate, a move that many see as having made him lose the ground and public goodwill. Immediately after, Kalausi was crumbling.

Since then, he has maintained an uncharacteristic silence and as at May 2016, he had not stepped into his constitiency for one year with his opponents starting early campaigns ahead of the August polls.

Unexpectedly, Otieno made a U-turn and rejoined ODM.

He has been present in key ODM rallies of late including the NASA coalition meeting in Bomet.

And as if that is not enough, he has declared that he will work day and night to ensure that Raila Odinga is elected Kenya's President in August.

For Otieno's opponents in August including former university student leader David Osiany, it is time to go back to the drawing board to upset the status quo as the spanner has been thrown into the works as the 'King of Rongo' is back.
