History making former Kisumu Town legislator Grace Onyango is probably one of the greatest female MPs the country has ever produced. Her daring personality shaped her illustrious political career where she has left an indelible mark.
Sitting at the parliamentary committee that investigated the heinous murder of former Nyandarua MP Josiah Mwangi Kariuki was perhaps the highlight of her enduring political legacy.
With the murder of the firebrand MP in 1975 creating tension in the country, Mrs Onyango found herself sitting in that committee that was formed by the then President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
When the report was submitted to the President before being debated in Parliament, it is claimed that Kenyatta deleted the names of his confidante Mbiyu Koinange who had been adversely mentioned in the findings.
At the floor of the house, when the report was finally tabled for debate, it is reported that the angry Onyango accused the President of deleting Koinange's name in the report tabled to him.
It's now 43 years since JM Kariuki died but the circumstances surrounding his death are still shrouded in mystery.
Onyango who lost her seat in 1983 will go down Kenya's history lane for her courageous approach to politics which enabled her to take male politicians head-on.
