It was in the 2013 general election that Ngilu almost plugged into political oblivion.

The NARC governor had unsuccessfully contested for the Kitui senatorial seat losing to former senator David Musila.

Ngilu was rejected by Kitui people in the senatorial election by the fact that she had declared support for President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto in a region largely dominated by the opposition.

Governor Ngilu who had fallen out with opposition leaders among tem wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka staged campaigns for Jubilee in Kitui that saw President Kenyatta elected.

Upon his election in 2013, President Kenyatta appointed Ngilu as the Lands Cabinet Secretary.

However, the Kitui governor was sacked in 2015 after she was implicated in a corruption scandal at her ministry.

Ngilu later fell out with Kenyatta after the sacking accusing him of politically targeting to finish her.

Ngilu was however cleared of the corruption allegations by the courts before contesting and winning the Kitui governor seat in 2017.

She was among three women elected as governors in the August 8, 2017, general election.

The Kitui governor is now in good terms with President Kenyatta and has vowed to work with him for the sake of development.

Ngilu is also among politicians likely to shape the 2022 presidential succession politics.
