President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged the National Assembly to pass the two thirds gender rule in honour of his late half-sister, Margaret Wambui.

Speaking on Thursday during Wambui's funeral service at St. Andrew's Church, the head of state noted that passing of the gender rule would ensure that women take their rightful place in the country.

"As we celebrate Margaret today, I would also like to celebrate all women. We have a responsibility to work together and ensure that the two thirds gender rule is passed so that women can take their rightful place,” he said.

President Kenyatta also eulogised Wambui, describing her as "a strong woman."

Wambui died last week Wednesday at a Nairobi hospital after a short illnesses aged 89.

She served as Nairobi mayor between 1970 - 1976.

She was also a powerful figure during the late President Jomo Kenyatta administration.
