Machakos town was established in 1887 as the capital city of Kenya.The British colonialists used it as an administrative centre. In 1899, the capital city was moved to Nairobi because Machakos was by-passed by the Kenya-Uganda railway.
If the railway line had passed in Machakos ,right now it would be as developed as Nairobi.

Well, Machakos town was named after an Akamba chief who was called Masaku Wa Munyati.
The county also boasts of the famous Kituluni hills that has waters flowing against gravity.
With a population of 1,098,584 in 2009 and an area of 6,281 square kilometres, Machakos county is one of the producers of drought-resistant sorghum and millet in the country.
It is a semi-arid area with hilly terrains and occupied mostly by the Akamba ethnicity.
