With the rise in demand for housing in Kenya, many people are buying land to invest in real estates and housing. This is the case in the developing counties including Kisii County where land has been transformed from agricultural use to housing needs.
Kisii County is one of the leading banana producers in Kenya but this has been greatly threatened by the thirst for real estates’ development. Productive lands have been put aside for the erection of storey building and other business structured buildings like the malls for business.
This has been highly accelerated by the fact that kisii county is becoming a metropolitan area due to the fact that it has several national learning institutions which are known to attract need for housing.
Although housing in important to human life, land for agriculture has been threatened thus making food price hike as production is low yet the demand is high.
With the change in weather patterns in Kenya today, agriculture has to depend on other artificial tactics like the green houses which are quite expensive thus many farmers have opted to invest in real estates as they are profitable throughout the year, they are not seasonal compared to farming.
Several other counties in Kenya are under the same threat including the most productive areas like; slopes of Mount Kenya, Kiambu County, Makueni County, Meru County among others.
To curb the future generations from starvations, the government should ensure that they embrace farming in the marginalized areas as they are yet to be invaded by this harmful pest called ‘real estate’.
