Deputy President William Ruto was among leaders who attended the memorial service of icon of the fight for multi-party democracy, Kenneth Matiba, on Wednesday at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi.
Speaking during the service, Ruto said Matiba was a fallen hero whose sacrifices for democracy benefited the current generation of Kenyans.
“We are here to mourn a fallen hero - Kenneth Matiba - who in a very special way made huge personal sacrifices both as a husband, father and also as a Kenyan," said the DP.
"We are beneficiaries of his sacrifices as a leader," he added.
Other leaders who attended the funeral service included President Uhuru Kenyatta, former President Mwai Kibaki, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, DP Ruto's spouse Rachel Ruto, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetangula among others.
Besides his role in spearheading the advent of multi-party democracy, Matiba was also among the first Kenyans who played a leading role in laying the strong foundations for Kenya as a Nation.
