Mlolongo is a fast growing commercial centre along Mombasa road in Machakos county.
It is a place that is known for heavy commercial tracks that stop there from Mombasa as they undergo weighing procedures at the weighbridge.
According to a report published on December 26, 2012 by Silvano Borruso, in 1984, Mlolongo was just an African bush on a narrow strip of land between old Mombasa road and new Mombasa road, 15km from Nairobi city centre.
Because Nairobi city was growing big, there was a huge demand for construction materials, especially sand.
Traders would therefore transport sand from Machakos past Mlolongo where they paid weighbridge charges before proceeding to Nairobi.
In mid 1980s, sand traders from Machakos found that by dumping their lorry loads along old Mombasa road, they avoided weighbridge charges.
Sand trading is still a common and thriving business in Mlolongo. The town is developing at an alarming rate with mushrooming of residential houses as well as business premises.
