Nakuru County government, led by Governor Lee Kinyanjui, is hell-bent to ensure the town is elevated into a city.
Kenya has three cities; Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
Nakuru town is earmarked to be the fourth city.
This is after the cabinet approved proposals to have Nakuru and Eldoret elevated into cities.
Kinyanjui and his leadership want to be credited as the team that saw the move achieved.
Already, the Lanet airstrip is set to be upgraded into an international airport, county houses in estates such as Kivumbini, Lake View among others will also be brought down and better housing set up for residents.
“His Excellency wants to be under his leadership that Nakuru was upgraded to a city. He wants to go into history,” a source close to the governor said.
Several investors have also swung into action with mega projects within the town to give it a facelift.
Kenya Women Holding launched a project to set a Sh1 billion mall in Nakuru town which will be among the major buildings in the town.
Egerton University Retirement benefit scheme will also set up a Sh1.6 billion mall.
Nakuru, famed for its tourist sites, will also enjoy funds from the national government as cities are considered for extra financing by the Treasury.
