It has been a long and frustrating struggle in an attempt to bring the presidency to Nyanza region.
Before former Prime Minister Raila Odinga graced the occasion, Thomas Joseph Mboya and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga tried all they could to ascend to Kenya's top job.
Jaramogi, Kenya's first Vice President was a heartbeat away from the big seat then occupied by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. However his political ambitions and ideologies intensified the national politics and led to party divisions. He later fell out with Kenyatta.
In 1992, Jaramogi vied for presidency but finished third after then president Daniel Arap Moi and Mr Kenneth Matiba.
Mboya, who was then minister for economic planning showed signs of taking the presidency but his ambitions were cut short by an assassin in 1969.
Then came Raila, who enjoyed support across the country. Raila launched his bid in 1997. However he lost the race, he came third after Moi and Kibaki.
In 2002, he spearheaded Kibaki's candidature under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ticket where the Nyanza population unanimously voted for Kibaki who went on to become the third President of Kenya.
The Luo revived their hopes in 2007 when Raila teamed up with former Eldoret North MP William Ruto. Again, the title slipped out of his hands in the tightly contested presidential elections that sparked violence across the country after Kibaki was declared winner. Raila later settled for the Prime minister position after long discussions.
In 2013, Raila threw his hat again into the ballot after teaming up with Kalonzo Musyoka under the Cord alliance. However, he was again bundled out by Uhuru Kenyatta to become the fourth President of Kenya.
Raila made another run for the presidency in August 2017 against Uhuru and lost after Uhuru was declared winner. The result was later annulled by the Supreme Court. A fresh elections was conducted which Uhuru later won with no major challenge. However Raila refused to participate citing lack of election reforms.
Now after the Raila handshake with Uhuru, His ship has taken another direction after being rooted for supporting William Ruto 2022 presidential bid. Now the question looms who is more influential to take over the Nyanza captaincy, and deliver the presidency.
