Before merging to form the National Super Alliance (Nasa), the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) first lost its Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo.

Elected on a Wiper Democratic Movement ticket, Kilonzo died April 27, 2013, under unclear circumstances.

He reportedly slept and failed to wake up at his firm bordering Maanzoni Lodge on Mombasa road.

His seat was later occupied by his son, lawyer Mutula Kilonzo Jnr during a by-election in July same year.

The senator (through Wiper), made a resounding win by garnering 163, 232 votes with Philip Kaloki (of NARK) coming a second distant with 9, 762 votes.

Cord also lost one of senior member, Homa Bay senator Otieno Kajwang' alias 'Mapambano'.

Known for his 'bado mapambano' slogan, Kajwang' was elected on an Orange Democratic (ODM) party ticket, during the 2013 election.

He died November 18, 2014 at around 11:34pm at the Mater Hospital, Nairobi, where he was rushed after complaining of chest pains.

Mapambano's seat was occupied by his brother, ODM's Moses Kajwang' during by-election held February 2015 beating seven other candidates. The Opposition (particularly ODM) suffered yet another major blow after one of its loyal members, Kwale County senator Boy Juma Boy, died February 12, 2017.

He was elected in the 2013 election, and strongly defended his party and party leader Raila Odinga.

Boy died at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, after short illness, as the Opposition prepared for the August 8, general election.
