With high unemployment rates in the country and due to the demands of life survival, many youths in Kibera resort to grabbing people’s handbags and mobile phones.

If you find yourself in Kibera, you need to be careful to safeguard yourself and your property from theft.

This is what you need to do to avoid being mugged.

1. Don’t play with your smartphone

It may seem normal to play with, listen to music or check texts on your smartphone. While you are busy with your phone, a mugger may see this and identify you as a potential victim.

2. Be aware of your surroundings

As you walk in the Kibera slum, make sure to look from side to side occasionally. The more you are aware of your surroundings, the easier it will be to avoid being mugged.

3. Avoid crowds

When walking in the Kibera slum, take care to avoid crowds of people except for the crowd that you are walking with. Also make sure to keep a distance from those near you, at least an arm’s length away from anyone who looks like they’re getting too close.

4. Avoid wearing expensive clothes

Don’t wear anything that looks like it has any value to avoid being a potential victim. If you not from Kibera, try as much as you can to dress like someone who lives in Kibera. Muggers and other criminals often target people who are visitors.

5. Travel on well-lit streets

If you happen to be in Kibera at night, stick to streets that are well-lit. The better lit a street is, the less likely a person will try to mug you.
